The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has adopted the 2012 edition of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 101: Life Safety Code, which requires healthcare facilities to conduct an annual inspection of fire door assemblies in accordance with NFPA-80: Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives.

Facilities participating in Medicare and Medicaid programs are governed by the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code (LSC) and NFPA 99 Health Care Facilities Code (HCFC) and include accredited and non-accredited hospitals, hospices, ASCs, SNFs, NFs, CAHs, RNHCIs, PACE, ESRD, and ICF/IIDs.
